1. 내가 그리스도 안에서 진실을 말하고 거짓말을 하지 아니하노라. 내 양심도 [성령]님 안에서 나에 대해 증언하거니와
2. 내게는 마음속에 큰 근심이 있고 계속해서 슬픔이 있노라.
3. 육체에 따른 내 형제, 내 친족을 위해서라면 차라리 내 자신이 그리스도로부터 저주받기를 바랄 수도 있으리니
4. 그들은 이스라엘 사람들이니라. 그들에게는 양자 삼으심과 영광과 언약들과 율법을 주심과 [하나님]을 섬김과 약속들이 속해 있고
5. 조상들도 그들의 것이요, 육체에 관한 한 그리스도께서도 그들에게서 나셨으니 그분은 모든 것 위에 계시며 영원토록 찬송 받으실 [하나님]이시니라. 아멘.
6. 그러나 [하나님]의 말씀이 효력을 상실한 것 같지 아니하니 이는 이스라엘에게서 난 자들이 다 이스라엘이 아니요,
7. 또한 그들이 아브라함의 씨라고 해서 다 아이들은 아니기 때문이라. 오직, 이삭 안에서 네 씨가 부름을 받으리라, 하셨으니
8. 곧 육체의 아이들인 자들 즉 이들이 [하나님]의 아이들이 아니요 오직 약속의 아이들이 그 씨로 여겨지느니라.
9. 그 까닭은 약속의 말씀이 이것이기 때문이라. 곧, 이때에 내가 오리니 사라에게 한 아들이 있으리라, 하셨느니라.
10. 이뿐 아니라 리브가도 한 사람 곧 우리 조상 이삭으로 말미암아 수태하였는데
11. (그 아이들이 아직 태어나지도 아니하고 무슨 선이나 악을 행하지도 아니하였으되 선택에 따른 [하나님]의 목적이 행위로 말미암지 아니하고 오직 부르시는 분으로 말미암아 서게 하려 하사)
12. 그때에 그분께서 그녀에게 이르시되, 형이 동생을 섬기리라, 하셨나니
13. 이것은 기록된바, 야곱은 내가 사랑하되 에서는 미워하였느니라, 함과 같으니라.
14. 그런즉 우리가 무슨 말을 하리요? [하나님]께 불의가 있느냐? 결코 있을 수 없느니라.
15. 그분께서 모세에게 이르시되, 내가 긍휼을 베풀 자에게 긍휼을 베풀고 내가 불쌍히 여길 자를 불쌍히 여기리라, 하시나니
16. 그런즉 이와 같이 그것은 원하는 자에게서 나지도 아니하고 달리는 자에게서 나지도 아니하며 오직 긍휼을 베푸시는 [하나님]에게서 나느니라.
17. 성경 기록이 파라오에게 이르기를, 내가 바로 이 목적을 위해 너를 일으켰나니 이것은 내가 네 안에서 내 권능을 보이고 내 이름을 온 땅에 두루 밝히 알리려 함이니라, 하시나니
18. 그런즉 그분께서 긍휼을 베풀 자에게 긍휼을 베푸시고 또 강퍅하게 할 자를 친히 강퍅하게 하시느니라.
19. 그러면 네가 내게 말하기를, 어찌하여 그분께서 여전히 허물을 찾으시느냐? 누가 그분의 뜻을 거역하였느냐? 하리니
20. 아니라, 오 사람아, 네가 누구이기에 [하나님]께 대꾸하느냐? 지어진 것이 자기를 지은 이에게 말하기를, 어찌하여 나를 이렇게 만들었소, 하겠느냐?
21. 토기장이가 같은 덩어리의 진흙으로 한 그릇을 만들어 존귀에 이르게 하고 다른 하나를 만들어 수치에 이르게 할 권한이 없겠느냐?
22. 만일 [하나님]께서 자신의 진노를 보이고 자신의 권능을 알리기 위해 파멸시키기에 합당한 진노의 그릇들에게 심히 오래 참으심으로 인내하시고
23. 이로써 영광에 이르도록 미리 예비하신 긍휼의 그릇들에게 자신의 영광의 풍성함을 알리려 하셨을진대 무슨 말을 하리요?
24. 이 긍휼의 그릇들은 우리니 곧 그분께서 유대인들 중에서 뿐만 아니라 이방인들 중에서도 부르신 자들이니라.
25. 이것은 그분께서 호세아의 글에서도 이르시되, 내가 내 백성이 아니던 자들을 내 백성이라 부르며 사랑받지 못하던 그녀를 사랑받는 자라 부르리라.
26. 또 전에 그들에게 이르기를, 너희는 내 백성이 아니라, 한 그곳에서 곧 거기에서 그들이 살아 계신 [하나님]의 아이들이라 불리리라, 함과 같으니라.
27. 또한 이사야도 이스라엘에 관하여 외쳐 이르되, 비록 이스라엘 자손의 수가 바다의 모래 같을지라도 남은 자만 구원을 받으리라.
28. 그분께서 그 일을 끝마치시고 의 안에서 그것을 단축시키시리니 이는 단축된 일을 [주]께서 땅 위에서 이루실 터이기 때문이라, 하느니라.
29. 이것은 또한 이사야가 미리 말한바, 만군의 [주]께서 우리를 위하여 한 씨를 남겨 두지 아니하셨더라면 우리가 소돔같이 되고 고모라같이 되었으리로다, 함과 같으니라.
30. 그런즉 우리가 무슨 말을 하리요? 의를 따르지 아니한 이방인들은 의 곧 믿음에서 난 의에 이르렀으나
31. 의의 법을 따라간 이스라엘은 의의 법에 이르지 못하였으니
32. 어찌된 까닭이냐? 이는 그들이 믿음으로 그것을 구하지 아니하고 오히려 율법의 행위로 되는 것처럼 구하였기 때문이라. 그들은 그 걸림돌에 걸려 넘어졌느니라.
33. 이것은 기록된바, 보라, 내가 걸림돌과 실족하게 하는 반석을 시온에 두노니 누구든지 그를 믿는 자는 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하리라, 함과 같으니라.

 

 

1. I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
2. That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
3. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
4. Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
5. Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
6. Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7. Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
9. For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.
10. And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11. (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12. It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14. What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17. For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20. Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21. Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22. What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23. And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24. Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25. As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
26. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
27. Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
28. For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
29. And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
30. What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31. But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
32. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33. As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
