1. 내가 사도가 아니냐? 내가 자유로운 자가 아니냐? 내가 예수 그리스도 우리 [주]를 보지 아니하였느냐? 너희는 [주] 안에서 행한 나의 일이 아니냐?
2. 다른 사람들에게는 내가 사도가 아닐지라도 분명히 너희에게는 사도이니 너희는 [주] 안에서 나의 사도직을 보증하는 봉인이니라.
3. 나를 시험하는 자들에 대한 내 대답은 이것이니라.
4. 우리에게 먹고 마실 권리가 없느냐?
5. 우리에게 다른 사도들이나 [주]의 형제들이나 게바와 같이 자매 곧 아내를 데리고 다닐 권리가 없느냐?
6. 나와 바나바만은 일하지 아니할 권리가 없느냐?
7. 어느 때고 누가 자기 비용을 들여 전쟁에 나가느냐? 누가 포도원을 만들고 그것의 열매를 먹지 아니하느냐? 누가 양 떼를 먹이고 그 양 떼의 젖을 먹지 아니하느냐?
8. 내가 사람으로서 이것들을 말하느냐? 율법도 같은 것을 말하지 아니하느냐?
9. 모세의 율법에, 너는 곡식을 밟는 소의 입에 마개를 씌우지 말라, 하고 기록되었나니 [하나님]께서 소들을 위해 염려하시느냐?
10. 아니면 전적으로 우리를 위해 말씀하시느냐? 틀림없이 이것은 우리를 위해 기록되었나니 밭을 가는 자는 소망 중에 갈며 소망 중에 타작하는 자는 자기의 소망에 참여하는 자가 되어야 마땅하니라.
11. 우리가 너희에게 영적인 것들을 뿌렸은즉 너희의 육적인 것들을 거둔다 해도 그것이 큰일이냐?
12. 다른 이들이 너희에 대한 이 권리에 참여하거든 하물며 우리는 어떠하겠느냐? 그럼에도 불구하고 우리가 이 권리를 쓰지 아니하고 모든 것을 참는 것은 우리가 그리스도의 복음을 가로막지 아니하려 함이라.
13. 거룩한 것들에 관하여 섬기는 자들이 성전에 속한 것들로 사는 줄 너희가 알지 못하느냐? 제단에서 섬기는 자들이 제단과 함께 헌물에 참여하는 자들임을 알지 못하느냐?
14. 이와 같이 [주]께서도 복음을 선포하는 자들이 복음으로 살 것을 정하셨느니라.
15. 그러나 내가 이러한 것들을 하나도 사용하지 아니하였고 또 내게 이같이 해 달라고 이런 것들을 쓰지 아니하였나니 내가 죽는 것이 누가 나의 자랑하는 것을 헛되게 만드는 것보다 나으리라.
16. 내가 복음을 선포할지라도 자랑할 것이 없나니 이는 필연적으로 내가 해야 하기 때문이라. 만일 내가 복음을 선포하지 아니하면 참으로 내게 화가 있으리로다!
17. 내가 자원하여 이 일을 하면 보상을 얻으려니와 내 뜻에 반하여 한다 할지라도 복음의 분배 사역을 내가 맡았노라.
18. 그런즉 나의 보상이 무엇이냐? 진실로 내가 복음을 선포할 때에 그리스도의 복음을 값없이 선포하고 이로써 복음 안에 있는 나의 권리를 남용하지 아니하는 것, 그것이로다.
19. 내가 모든 사람으로부터 자유하나 스스로 모든 사람에게 종이 된 것은 더 많은 사람을 얻고자 함이라.
20. 유대인들에게 내가 유대인같이 된 것은 유대인들을 얻고자 함이요, 율법 아래 있는 자들에게 율법 아래 있는 자같이 된 것은 율법 아래 있는 자들을 얻고자 함이며
21. 율법 없는 자들에게 (내가 [하나님]께 율법 없는 자가 아니요, 그리스도께 율법 아래 있는 자이나) 율법 없는 자같이 된 것은 율법 없는 자들을 얻고자 함이라.
22. 약한 자들에게 내가 약한 자같이 된 것은 약한 자들을 얻고자 함이요, 내가 모든 사람에게 모든 것이 된 것은 어찌하든지 몇 사람이라도 구원하고자 함이라.
23. 내가 복음을 위하여 이것을 행함은 너희와 함께 복음에 참여하는 자가 되고자 함이라.
24. 경주할 때에 달리는 자들이 다 달릴지라도 한 사람이 상을 받는 줄을 너희가 알지 못하느냐? 너희도 상을 받도록 이와 같이 달리라.
25. 이기려고 애쓰는 자마다 모든 일에서 절제하나니 이제 그들은 썩을 관을 얻고자 그 일을 하되 우리는 썩지 아니할 관을 얻고자 하느니라.
26. 그러므로 내가 이와 같이 달리되 정해진 것이 없는 것처럼 하지 아니하고 또 이와 같이 싸우되 허공을 치는 자같이 하지 아니하며
27. 오직 내가 내 몸을 억제하여 복종시킴은 내가 다른 사람들에게 복음을 선포한 뒤에 어떤 방법으로든 내 자신이 버림을 받지 않게 하려 함이라.

 

1. Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?
2. If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.
3. Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,
4. Have we not power to eat and to drink?
5. Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
6. Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?
7. Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
8. Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
9. For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
10. Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
11. If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
12. If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
13. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
14. Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
15. But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.
16. For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
17. For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
18. What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
19. For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
20. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
21. To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
22. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
23. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.
24. Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
