1. 또한 형제들아, 나는 이것을 너희가 모르기를 원치 아니하노니 곧 우리 조상들이 다 구름 아래에 있고 모두 바다를 지나가며
2. 모두가 구름과 바다 속에서 모세에게로 침례를 받고
3. 모두가 같은 영적 음식을 먹으며
4. 모두가 같은 영적 음료를 마셨느니라. 그들이 자기들을 따라가던 영적 반석으로부터 마셨는데 그 반석은 그리스도였느니라.
5. 그러나 [하나님]께서 그들 가운데 많은 사람들을 매우 기뻐하지 아니하셨으므로 그들이 광야에서 쓰러졌느니라.
6. 이제 이러한 일들이 우리의 본보기가 되었으니 이것은 그들이 탐한 것 같이 우리가 악한 것들을 탐하지 아니하게 하려 함이라.
7. 그들 가운데 어떤 자들과 같이 너희는 우상 숭배자가 되지 말라. 이것은 기록된바, 백성이 앉아서 먹고 마시며 일어나서 뛰놀더라, 함과 같으니라.
8. 그들 가운데 어떤 자들이 음행하다가 하루에 이만 삼천 명이 쓰러졌으니 우리는 그들과 같이 음행하지 말자.
9. 또한 그들 가운데 어떤 자들이 그리스도를 시험하다가 뱀들에게 멸망을 당하였으니 우리는 그들과 같이 시험하지 말자.
10. 또한 그들 가운데 어떤 자들이 불평하다가 파멸시키는 자에게 멸망을 당하였으니 너희는 그들과 같이 불평하지 말라.
11. 이제 이 모든 일은 그들에게 본보기로 일어났으며 또 그것들은 세상의 끝을 만난 우리를 훈계하기 위해 기록되었느니라.
12. 그런즉 스스로 서 있는 줄로 생각하는 자는 넘어지지 않도록 주의할지니라.
13. 사람에게 공통적으로 있는 시험 외에는 너희가 어떤 시험도 당하지 아니하였나니 [하나님]은 신실하사 너희가 감당할 수 있는 것 이상으로 시험 당하는 것을 너희에게 허락하지 아니하시고 또한 그 시험과 함께 피할 길을 내사 너희가 능히 그것을 감당하게 하시느니라.
14. 그런즉 나의 극진히 사랑하는 자들아, 우상 숭배를 피하라.
15. 내가 지혜로운 자들에게 말하듯 말하노니 너희는 내가 말하는 바를 판단하라.
16. 우리가 축복하는 축복의 잔은 그리스도의 피에 함께 참여하는 것이 아니냐? 우리가 떼는 빵은 그리스도의 몸에 함께 참여하는 것이 아니냐?
17. 우리가 많아도 한 빵이요 한 몸이니 이는 우리가 다 그 한 빵에 참여하는 자들이기 때문이라.
18. 육체를 따라 난 이스라엘을 보라. 희생물을 먹는 자들이 제단에 참여하는 자가 아니냐?
19. 그런즉 내가 무엇을 말하느냐? 우상은 무엇이며 우상들에게 희생물로 바친 것은 무엇이냐?
20. 그러나 내가 말하건대 이방인들은 자기들이 희생물로 드리는 것들을 [하나님]께 희생물로 드리지 아니하고 마귀들에게 드리나니 나는 너희가 마귀들과 교제하는 것을 원치 아니하노라.
21. 너희가 [주]의 잔과 마귀들의 잔을 겸하여 마실 수 없으며 [주]의 상과 마귀들의 상에 겸하여 참여하는 자가 될 수 없느니라.
22. 우리가 [주]의 질투를 일으키겠느냐? 우리가 그분보다 강하냐?
23. 모든 것이 나를 위해 적법하나 모든 것이 적절하지는 아니하며 모든 것이 나를 위해 적법하나 모든 것이 세워 주지는 아니하나니
24. 아무도 자기 것을 구하지 말고 각각 다른 사람이 잘되기를 구하라.
25. 무엇이든지 고기 시장에서 파는 것은 양심을 위해 묻지 말고 먹으라.
26. 땅과 거기의 충만한 것이 [주]의 것이니라.
27. 믿지 않는 자들 중에서 누가 너희를 잔치에 초대하여 너희가 가고자 하거든 너희 앞에 차려 놓은 것은 무엇이든지 양심을 위해 묻지 말고 먹으라.
28. 그러나 어떤 사람이 너희에게 이르되, 이것은 우상들에게 희생물로 바친 것이라, 하거든 그것을 알게 한 사람과 양심을 위해 먹지 말라. 땅과 거기의 충만한 것이 [주]의 것이니라.
29. 내가 말하는 양심은 네 양심이 아니라 다른 사람의 양심이니라. 어찌하여 내 자유가 다른 사람의 양심으로 말미암아 판단을 받으리요?
30. 만일 내가 은혜로 참여할진대 어찌하여 내가 감사드리는 것으로 인해 비방을 받으리요?
31. 그런즉 너희가 먹든지 마시든지 무엇을 하든지 다 [하나님]의 영광을 위하여 하라.
32. 유대인들에게나 이방인들에게나 [하나님]의 교회에나 어떤 실족거리도 주지 말되
33. 곧 많은 사람이 구원을 받도록 내가 내 자신의 유익을 구하지 아니하고 그들의 유익을 구하면서 모든 일에서 모든 사람을 기쁘게 하는 것 같이 하라.

 

1. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2. And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3. And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
4. And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
5. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
7. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
8. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
9. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
10. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
11. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
12. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
13. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
14. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
15. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
16. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
17. For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
18. Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
19. What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
20. But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
22. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
23. All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
24. Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
25. Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
26. For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
27. If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
28. But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
29. Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
30. For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
31. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
32. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:
33. Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
